Fury Of Firestorm: The Nuclear Man #15
DC Comics (February, 2013)
“Takeover” part 3 WRITER/PENCILER: Dan Jurgens FINISHES: Ray McCarthy LETTERER: Taylor Esposito COLORS: Hi-Fi ASSISTANT EDITOR: Rickey Purden EDITOR: Rachel Gluckstern “FIRESTORM” CREATORS: Gerry Conway & Al Milgrom
Ronnie and Jason attempt to reclaim Firestorm from Dr. Megala when they receive surprise help in the form of Captain Atom. When these two atomic-powered men clash, there could be some serious damage.
What they got right: I wasn’t interested in the Captain Atom comic so I didn’t follow his exploits. I don’t know how well this story matched his depiction but he was darn cool here. The battle between Megala and Atom seems to have been something a long time coming and as long as you know who he is you get a good enough idea about their association to follow along. It might even get people to seek out Atom’s defunct comic or Legion Lost, which appears to be where he is now. This is what a cameo/guest appearance should do.
What they got wrong: Megala’s fate is rather unclear. Unless he’s still a factor next issue one wonders if he’s still within the Firestorm matrix and if he’ll cause trouble again.
Recommendation: I couldn’t get a Best Scene nomination out of this comic because it was too good. I wish more of the New 52 was like this.

He appears in the very last issue of Legion Lost, but you can’t force me to get that book. A quick flip-through didn’t reveal anything of immediate interest.
I was one of the few people who actively enjoyed the Captain Atom comic, apparently, and yes he was like that, with Doc Manhattan undertones and more “hair” (a plume of blue flame).

Well, Moore did create Manhattan to replace Captain Atom when DC was smart enough to turn down the corrupting of the Charlton characters (which later DC masters would do themselves) so there is a precedence.
