Worlds' Finest #8

When Kara hits the wall….

Worlds’ Finest #8

DC Comics (March, 2013)

“Hunt And Be Hunted”
WRITER: Paul Levitz
ARTISTS: George Pérez, Cafu, and Cliff Richards
COLORISTS: Hi-Fi and Rosemary Cheetham
COVER: Kevin Maguire & Cheetham
EDITOR: Wil Moss
“HUNTRESS” CREATORS: Paul Levitz, Joe Staton, & Bob Layton
“POWER GIRL” CREATORS (uncredited): Gerry Conway, Ric Estrada, and Wally Wood

When Huntress is shot because of a price on her head (if you’ve seen the Huntress: Crossbow At The Crossroads mini-series–I have the trade–you know the person responsible), Power Girl whisks her away to recover. As Helena dreams of her live in her home reality, Power Girl goes to end the bounty…the hard way. Things may be more problematic for our heroines because Damian didn’t cover his tracks very well concerning the previous arc.

What they got right: This is how we want to see Power Girl; not flirting with every male she comes across or can help her go home but kicking evil butt and taking names. We learn a bit more about Helena’s childhood.

What they got wrong: I really don’t want the heroines to interact with the regular DC heroes. At least not just yet. I like that they operate under the radar of the various hero teams and shadow organizations that litter the New 52 so I don’t want to see Batman come in and mess that up. Especially since this version of Batman has been kind of a jerk to other heroes. He may or may not accept Helena but I know he’ll immediately have issues with Karen.

Recommendation: I’d like to see more stories like this, where PG isn’t checking out men and complaining about not going home, even if the latter is understandable. Give this comic a read.

He wanted something with a good view.

Perhaps the Batman appearance was inevitable given Helena’s parentage. Did you have the same issue with Damian? But I agree that this was a good action issue, and it showed just how far PG would go for her partner, without it becoming melodramatic and maudlin.

My pet peeve is that there are too many splashes in the book, which seems to mean it was thin on story. The New52’s track record on this has been pretty poor to date, but World’s Finest hadn’t really fallen prey to it until now.

    • I wasn’t thrilled with Damian’s appearance but he seemed willing to keep his dad out of it and frankly I don’t like the kid regularly, even if I do think he’s a good character. It worked to see two Bat-offspring of two universes team-up. I still want to keep Power Girl and Huntress out of the main superhero scene for now.

There were one or two moments where I thought the page space was used poorly but after going over Liefeld’s Galactica last year anything’s an improvement. 😀
