Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classics #7

IDW Publishing (January, 2013)

original uncolored printing: May 1986

STORY/ART: Kevin Eastman & Peter Laird
LETTERER: Steve Lavigne
IDW COLORS: Scorpion Studios
IDW EDITOR: Tom Waltz

I didn’t pick up the last bunch of issues, featuring the Turtles learning about TCRI, breaking into the building in hopes of learning their origin, meeting the Utrom, getting teleported to another planet, meeting Fugitoid and getting caught up in a war between the Triceratons and the Federation because I already have that collected in a different book and both money and space are issues right now.

Anyway, the Turtles return to Earth with Fugitoid and a squad of Triceratons along for the ride. Splinter and the Turtles are reunited and all the pieces of their lives and origins are finally gathered. However, the transmat beams haven’t gone unnoticed outside and the National Guard is ready to storm the TCRI building!

What they got right: At last the full origin of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles has been revealed (decades ago but that’s besides the point). This story arc wrapped up very well here.

What they got wrong: There’s this one panel where a cameraman is knocked over and they have the reporter’s word balloon sideways to match the visual. I see what the letter was going for but I don’t think the execution really works that well.

Recommendation: This is probably best read having caught the previous issues of this arc, but due to the full origin of the ooze and the Utrom’s backstory here it becomes a must-own issue for Turtles fans, and now you can get it at a cheaper price and in full color. Not a bad deal unless you insist on the original black-and-white.
