Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Secret History of the Foot Clan #1
IDW Publishing (December, 2012)
STORY/ARTIST: Mateus Santolouco SCRIPT: Mateus Santolouco & Erik Burnham COLORIST: Joao “Azeitona” Vieira LETTERER: Shawn Lee EDITOR: Bobby CurnowI’m glad this is a blog so I don’t have to try and pronounce Mateus’ name.
Someone has discovered the early days of the Foot Clan, how and why a mighty samurai founded the ninja clan, a secret that allowed him to rule long past when he should have lived, and how he ultimately met his end. The Turtles would love to know more, and the Shredder would love that secret of immortality, a secret guarded by a shapeshifting woman and someone Krang should know too well.
What they got right: This miniseries focuses on the history of the Foot, which I’ve only seen done once before. Maybe the original comic did a similar story, but the closest I’ve seen is the previous cartoon, which tied the Shredder to the Utroms (mainly by making him one). The art isn’t something I’d like to see on a regular basis and I wish had stuck to the flashbacks but it is a nice style and, as Splinter has become my measuring stick, he draws the rat sensei very well.
What they got wrong: I wonder how much influence the ongoing’s writer actually has with this story? After all, this is supposed to be canon to the main series and it would be disappointing if Eastman or Tom Waltz had no say in it.
Recommendation: A curious story and one that bears a further look. However, I can’t judge the mini as a whole until I see more.
