Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Secret History Of The Foot Clan #2
IDW Publishing (January, 2013)
STORY/ART/COVER: Mateus Santoluco SCRIPT: Mateus Santoluco & Erik Burnham COLORIST: Joao “Azeitona” Vieira LETTERER: Shawn Lee EDITOR: Bobby Curnow
The Foot make contact with Dr. Miller to seek his aid in uncovering Kitsune’s secrets. The Turtles and their human comrades give chase. In the past, we learn that Oroku Saki may himself be the reincarnation of the warrior who started the Foot Clan and may take it away from the lighter path they are on. We also see the early struggle with Saki, Hamato Yoshi, and Tang Shen.
What they got right: The art style still serves the story well and there is slightly more difference between “then” and “now” that is a big help despite how small the change is. The Foot Clan’s origin held my attention and while you could say the modern-day tale is unnecessary it isn’t a hinderance to the tale.
What they got wrong: OK, I’m now confused as to how reincarnation works here. Shredder is the reincarnation of the not-so-immortal assassin that started the Foot AND the reincarnation of original Oroku Saki? Granted I don’t believe in or really follow reincarnation but that seems a bit overdoing it. Splinter and the Turtles are supposed to be the reincarnation of Hamato Yoshi and his sons in this continuity so are any more of THEIR past lives involved in this story?
Recommendation: A pretty good tale that’s worth checking out if your fans of this new TMNT continuity.
