Young Justice #24
DC Comics (March, 2013)
“Players” part 5: Milburn, Edgar & Jake (no, I have no idea what this title means) WRITER: Greg Weisman ARTIST: Christopher Jones COLORIST: Zac Atkinson LETTERER: Wes Abbot EDITOR: Sarah Gaydos
Between Braniac and Kylstar our heroes are in big trouble. It doesn’t help that Batgirl is in for the fight of her life against Match while Beast Boy worries about his friend. Oh, and Metropolis is being shrunken down…you know, as Braniac tends to do.
What they got right: Action, fun, excitement–these are the gifts this comic brings. While I complain about Simon Furman having too much going on in his Transformers tales, that’s because they’re unrelated while the various events here are connected.
What they got wrong: I’m starting to get the feeling that Weisman is trying to stuff in all the story ideas they won’t be doing with both the comic and show being canceled. That bugged me when Dynamite did that with Buck Rodgers and it bugs me here, but at least Weisman is doing a better job making it all work together than they did with Buck. Also, the subplot with Beast Boy trying to protect his friend is as useless as Dick’s birthday party is from the “year zero” part of the story.
Recommendation: It’s sad that this comic is the ending. I don’t care that they just as foolishly canned the TV show. Both are great gateways into the DC Universe, but the previous one so I guess that’s why things are being dropped. Enjoy it while you still can.
