Fury of Firestorm #16

“You’re pretty grabby for a first date.”

Fury of Firestorm #16

Fun story: The first issue of the original Fury of Firestorm I picked up was #16

DC Comics (March, 2013)

“Takeover” part 4
WRITER/PENCILER: Dan Jurgens
INKERS: Karl Kesel & Roy McCarthy
LETTERER: Travis Lanham
COLORS: Ho-Fi
ASSISTANT EDITOR: Rickey Purdin
EDITORS: Rachel Gluckstern & Mike Cotton
“FIRESTORM” CREATOR: Gerry Conway & Al Milgrom

Ronnie and Jason have regained control over Firestorm and after Ronnie wins the big game Firestorm finally takes the fight to the Continuum. However, Megala’s actions make Firestorm look like a bad guy in the eyes of the military…and the Teen Titans!

What they got right: The artwork is real good, at least in the second half. The first half is OK, but I think McCarthy did a better job going over Jurgens’s pencils. The end of the arc is a satisfying conclusion.

What they got wrong: Unfortunately even Jurgens is making his heroes look bad in people’s eyes. I’m willing to blame a mandate from upstairs who still wants to be Marvel Lite rather than DC Comics. Even then Jurgens is a better writer that most of the better promoted writers DC currently has.

Recommendation: I’m hoping Fury of Firestorm doesn’t get hit the same way Justice League International did; great first arc, disappointing second arc, dropped during the third arc. That or Jurgens taken off of the title he improved by leaps and bounds. Grab it while it’s still good.

No one moment really stood out as a Best Scene nomination, but it’s a good overall book.
