Masters of the Universe: Origin of He-Man
DC Comics (March, 2013)
“The Beginning” WRITER: Joshua Hale Fialkov ARTIST: Ben Oliver COLORIST: Jose Villarrubia & Kathryn Layno LETTERER: Saida Temofonte EDITOR: Michael McCalister
Skeletor breaks into the palace seeking the Power Sword, the key to Castle Greyskull. However, Prince Adam is strangely unaffected by Skeletor’s sleep spell and is forced to help him find it…until it calls to him and unlocks the power of He-Man!
I’m going off format here because there isn’t a lot to praise here. It’s a decent enough origin for the universe they’ve created. One problem is that the story shifts back and forth in time again, but unlike the Skeletor origin comic I can follow what’s happening. There’s also the painted art style that only works during Adam’s vision. Any other complaints I’ve already logged with the main series. But as He-Man origins go I think I prefer the recent cartoon remake. There was more weight to it than “wake up, get sword” from this tale.
Recommendation: There’s really nothing for me to warn you away but there’s nothing here for me to praise, either. It….just exists. It’s not really a “must have”, which is a crying shame for origin stories, and thus far neither origin comic seems to really matter. It’s a shame because he did a fair job with Doctor Who but Fialkov is not making me care about these origins.
