Yes, it’s a BW Article Link with a different name. However, I have enough of a hole in my schedule that I may have more convention footage for you this week, but a little extra time doesn’t hurt.
On the surface, superpowers look totally awesome. One of the biggest “geek questions” asked to “non-geeks” is “which superpower would you most like to have”. Naturally, most of us grab from one of Superman’s powers. (And yet I used It Girl for my image. I blame tomorrow’s review.) Comics, cartoons and Hollywood make superpowers look so cool! And then some schmuck brings up “realism”. Like “if people showed up with superpowers, other people would act more like they do in Marvel than in DC”. At least that’s what they used to say before the New 52.
Of course I always maintain that superhero stories are lacking is “realism” anyway. They’re escapist fantasies (that we keep trying to deny our kids and no I’m not backing off of that) where we get to imagine how could it would be. But you want realism? Or do you want to toss lightning bolts, fire rays from your eyes, set up force fields? You can’t have both. 6 Awesome Superpowers (That Would Suck In Real Life) makes that point clear. Omniscience is best left to the Lord, Wolverine’s healing factor is part of why he’s such a jerk, and stopping time will do more than mess with your watch. Keep your realism in the real world and stop ruining my fun!
