Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #19
IDW Publishing (February, 2012)
STORY: Kevin Eastman & Tom Waltz SCRIPT: Tom Waltz ARTIST: Ben Bates COLORIST: Ronda Pattison LETTERER: Shawn Lee EDITOR: Bobby Curnow
Things don’t go well in the Neutrino camp with their king and queen being captured. Luckily, the princess is able to get everybody together and accepts the Turtles’ aid in rescuing her parents and dealing with Krang. Back o n Earth, Splinter and the humans try to find Krang’s Earth base…but the Foot have already found it.
What they got right: I like Princess Trib (not as much as Mikey, though). She’s level-headed and able to bring her people together. Not bad for a young girl (unless there’s something about Neutrino lifespans that’s going to disappoint poor Michelangelo in the future…”you’re HOW old?”), she no stereotypical princess. The Turtles each have their own part in the conflict and even though they aren’t working together they’re in the right positions to help. The interactions between the Turtles and Neutrinos don’t feel forced and like watching them together.
What they got wrong: Is it just me or do the Turtles in this issue strongly resemble the Nickelodeon cartoon? Bates drew the cover for this one so I know he can draw then differently from the Nick version. Granted he would do well if they chose him for the Nick-based spinoff comic, but it seems the wrong character models to go with here. It’s most noticeable for me with Donatello.
Recommendation: Another good issue, showing you CAN make a proper update without being a slave to the original. Worth reading.
No Best Scene nomination from this one. It’s all good, but nothing really stands out.
