The more I hear about this movie the less I like it.
So why are superhero movies and cartoons (live-action TV shows not as much) doing so well but the comics they’re based on failing so miserably? CBR subsidiary Comics Should Be Good not only takes a look at that (the title of the piece) but begins with a response to letter writers putting down all-ages books (you already know my opinion on that).
However, it’s one his arguments about why the movies are doing better that I really want to focus on and maybe do my own commentary on someday. Greg Burgas makes the case that what DC and Marvel rate for teens should actually be age-rated higher while some “Teen+” rated comics are rated too high. While there’s room for debate as to what should be ranked what I will agree that for companies who complained, and later ignored, the Comics Code Authority under complaint that poorly enforced the code, they’re doing a far worse job when it comes to rating their comics for certain age groups and coming way too close to proving Fredric Wertham right long after the fact. (And yes, I’ve heard someone tried to fact-check him, but nowadays who really cares? Damage was done, folks.)
