Transformers Regen One #89

And so began Hot Rod’s career as an internet reviewer.

Transformers: Regeneration One #89

IDW Publishing (March, 2013)

“Natural Selection” part 4
WRITER: Simon Furman
PENCILER: Andrew Wildman
INKER: Stephen Baskerville
COLORIST: John-Paul Bove
COVER ART: Guido Guidi
LETTERER: Chris Mowry
EDITOR: John Barber

As Scorponok’s altered Autobots and Decepticons continue to hunt the remaining uncontrolled Autobots, the Dinobots decided to judge one of their own, namely Grimlock. Meanwhile, Rodimus makes a discover. On Earth, Prime…just drives around while Shockwave fights for his sanity within his mind.

What they got right: Grimlock actually being called on his screwing-up? In a Furman-penned story? Sure it doesn’t last long, but that’s in-story circumstances. Probably won’t be brought up again, so enjoy it while you can. I also admit they do a fair job of getting across just how bleak things are for the Autobots. So yeah, this is one of those (rare) times they got something right.

What they got wrong: Everything else, of course. There are three unnecessary subplots, only two of which have a chance of coming together. I don’t see where Hot Rod hunting the “prototypes” underground…or why they had to HAVE prototypes for the Transformers all of a sudden…has anything to do with what’s going on right now.

Recommendation: If it were just the main story I might give it a mild recommendation. However, the subplots and history of the title, including this arc, makes that difficult.

Oh come on, you knew I'd nominate this.
