Speaking of impractical outfits….
Superheroine outfits don’t always make sense. In fact they sometimes make less sense, as any of you dropping in from Hawkeye Initiative articles know. (Seriously, the Spotlight’s been getting a lot of traffic from this and this site. If you’re from there, hi.) But we’re not talking about sexist fashion but how impractical that sexist fashion is. Cracked.com contributor Jacopo della Quercia didn’t just go it alone but went the extra step of going to professional cosplayer Ruby Rocket to bring us The 5 Most Impractical Aspects of Superhero Costumes, although most of the entries are about superheroines. Things like spandex versus leather verses latex comes up, but even the masks are showing how female outfits themselves are as sexist as the poses they’re put into. Plus it turns out we were all right about fighting in high heels.
Personally I would have asked people in the “real life superhero” community since they actually run around the city dealing with crime or talking to kids but a cosplayer should have some interesting insights, too.
