Mega Man #24

The Sonic variant just reverses the “faded” art. Lame.

Mega Man and Sonic The Hedgehog are fighting each other in the Green Hill Zone, and Wily and Eggman couldn’t be happier. Flash back to a Chaos Emerald ending up in Wily’s hands, allowing Drs. Wily and Eggman to meet and team-up, creating a new “Genesis Wave” as seen the previous Sonic and Mega Man comics. The villains want to get more Chaos Emeralds and thanks to circumstances must roboticize some of Sonic’s friends combined with Ra Moon’s technology to create the “Roboticized Masters”.

What they got right: This may be the best villain teaming I’ve ever seen. Wily and Eggman work together well, whether it’s coming up with a plan or naming their new tools like the Skull Egg Zone or the Wily Egg ship. The designs on the “Roboticized Masters” versions of Tails, Shadow, Amy, and Knuckles are pretty cool, even if Tails is missing his tails.

What they got wrong: I’m hoping roboticized Tails doesn’t interfere with a Rush/T-Pup team-up, although I was hoping Tails would get to do more in this story. And oh look, the obligatory heroes fight each other in a team-up. I wish they’d skip that more often and go right to joining forces.

Other notes: This is a cool thing for joint Sonic/Mega Man fans but there’s a special added treat for me as a former member of the Sprite Comics community. Like a lot of others I got into Bob And George: The Comic Strip due to looking for Mega Man fan comics. Other people started making their own sprite comics, sometimes Mega Man but sometimes going into other video games. (For example, Brian Clevinger of Atomic Robo fame started out doing a Final Fantasy sprite comics.) The second most popular from what I could tell? Sonic the Hedgehog. I even wanted to pair them with other video game/comic heroes in my own failed sprite comic. So seeing a Mega Man/Sonic team up makes me happy.

Recommendation: Not a lot happens action wise (hence the lack of a Best Scene nomination) but it does set up the rest of the crossover so it’s still worth checking out.
