Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Villain Micro-Series #2
Featuring Baxter Stockman
IDW Publishing (May, 2013)
WRITER: Erik Bunham ARTIST: Andy Kuhn COLORIST: John Rauch SELECTED COVER ART: Tyler Walpole LETTERER: Tom B. Long EDITOR: Bobby Curnow
As Baxter toils under Krang, he isn’t planning to let the Earth be terraformed…for selfish reasons, of course. As he works to disrupt Krang’s plans…or at least learn what they are…he flashes back to his youth and how his father is indirectly responsible for the man Baxter would become.
What they got right: Baxter doesn’t have a deep backstory and for what we got I don’t think he needs to. His father pushed him and Baxter lost his humanity to the urge to win. Simple, done. We get an homage to the old cartoon turning him into a fly mutant with the “flyborg”.
What they got wrong: I needed something to put here, but this is more personal taste than something they “got wrong” really. The art is serviceable and better than mine (most people’s are) but it didn’t work for me as well as some other artists. I also wonder if Kuhn was trying to take a few cue from Kevin Eastman’s style but I could be wrong there.
Recommendation: Proof that not every origin story is long and deep, and events here will affect the main series. No Best Scene nominations but still worth looking at.
