It’s presented by Penny Arcade now, but that’s the logo I have in my media library
Here at the Spotlight we (that’s me and my multiple personalities apparently) are proud supporters of parents watching TV shows, reading comics, or listening to music their kids listen to (although for that last one they may want to look up the lyrics) and opening a dialog with their kids. They also may be surprised that then enjoy something their kids do as well. (As a bonus you then make it uncool and kids will abandon it. If you’re a parent who actually supports that, you’re a jerk!)
Extra Credits believes that parents should pay attention to the games their kids are playing for the same reasons. The ESRB rating isn’t enough to be a good parent. Understand what your child is playing and why, and make a learning and bonding experience over it. In their latest episode, the crew at EC explains in better detail, and this can go to all other media.
See, that’s a good plan. Don’t look at video games, cartoons (regardless of what country they come from), music, or anything else your kids are into as the enemy. Treat them as a way to connect with your kids. You don’t have to “save them from that evil media”. You can use it to create something good and learn more about your son/daughter and the new world they’re growing up in. Turn a negative into a positive. (Especially you Christian parents. It’s what God does with you.)
