The identity of the Hypothetical Gentlemen is revealed as the Matrix of Galifrey, and he plans to end time as the Time Lords were planning. With a little help from Clara the Doctor may yet stop his plans.

What they got right: The nitpicks to come aside, the ending was satisfying and typical New Who. The Time War connection isn’t bad outside of my general issues with New Who’s depiction of the Time Lords. Clara is a big help in this story and if anything else it’s a good showing for her.

What they got wrong: So the Time Lords were so evil at this point that the Matrix itself went sentient and corrupt? So the Doctor is the only decent thing that came out of Galifrey? Now I really wonder what happened to Romana and Leela.

Recommendation: This whole story arc has been pretty bland and while the finale was a good showing for Clara nothing else really worked for me. Based on the first point, I recommend avoiding it if you haven’t been reading the comic thus far but if you have the latter point says that it doesn’t hurt. It’s just the wrong storyline to introduce yourself to IDW’s take on Doctor Who.

I liked the arc. It was filled with big ideas and brazenly connected to the Time War which sometimes seems like a sacred cow thou shalt not explore in or out of canon. It probably could have been condensed into 3 issues, which makes it a bit of a throwback to classic Who’s 4-parters ;-). Nice art too.
