Battlestar Galactica Season 3 #1
Realm Press (June/july, 1999)
“No Place Like Home” WRITER: James A. Kuhoric ARTIST: Chris Scalf & Robert Scott COVER ART: Chris Scalf LETTERER: Mark L. Haynes EDITOR: J.C. Vaughn
Aliens come across a still alive Baltar. On the Galactica, drills are getting to the Warriors, and the Council still wants to just find any old planet to settle on, thinking the Cylons are no longer a problem. The Imperious Leader begs to differ. And something else has snuck aboard the Battlestar.
What they got right: The characters sound like the characters (although why is Starbuck going on a date with Athena–see previous comments on their version of Starbuck) the art is as good as the painted art can be for a comic, and it feels like a continuing story from the “Season 2” comic. (I’ve given up on “Search For Sanctuary” at this point.)
What they got wrong: I am starting to worry about the multiple storylines. You have the Council wanting to settle a planet, the creature from said planet, Baltar being found, Imperious Leader becoming fanatical about destroying the humans, Lucifer scheming, and Starbuck and Athena going on a date, which I do remember leads to trouble. Please don’t go the Simon Furman route and make all these unconnected events going on until they do or don’t merge with current events.
Recommendation: It’s still a good comic but I think it’s more for fans at this point. That’s not a bad thing, since I am one, but I’m not convinced most casual viewers or people who don’t like the classic show are going to get into this issue.
