Godzilla: Rulers Of Earth #5
IDW Publishing (October, 2013)
STORY: Chris Mowry (writer) and Matt Frank ARTIST: Jeff Zornow COLORIST: Priscilla Tramontano LETTERER: Shawn Lee EDITOR: Bobby CurnowFirst a correction from the review of issue #4. The monster at the end apparently isn’t a new monster, but Varan, from the movie Varan the Unbelievable. While he did appear in Destroy All Monsters I haven’t seen the original movie and I don’t remember him in the other one.
Named Varan by Lucy’s group, the monster from the end of last issue chases the group until it gets attacked by Rodan. The team seeks shelter in an army bunker where Lucy comes across another monster being held prisoner by the Chinese military that they’ve dubbed Gaira. They had hoped the kaiju hunters would help them find his counterpart, Sanda. But when the fight between Varan and Rodan ends up in the base, Lucy breaks Garia out, who joins the fight. Meanwhile, Godzilla is on his way to Las Vegas.
What they got right: I like that Lucy’s team is getting some action. The story is working on two fronts, the military and the civilian, and that works for me. The fights between the three monsters was well-done.
What they got wrong: Varan, Sanda, and Gaira’s place in the Godzilla Universe is basically cameos and I think they have enough monsters to deal with. Also, Gaira was depicted as eating people and Sanda was the “good” monster of the brothers. I hope this is remembered should he reappears. Here he almost looks like the good “guy”.
Recommendation: This is a great way to get Godzilla fans into comics. This is my favorite arc of the ongoing Godzilla universe and it comes highly recommended.
