Battletech #3

Did the Macross/Robotech people ever sue FASA?

Battletech #3

Blackthorne Publishing (April, 1988)

“The Way We Die”
PLOT: Joe Judt
SCRIPT: Lance Hampton
ARTIST: Abel Laxamana
EDITOR: John Stephenson

A look at the other side of the battle for this one. Captain Frost, a commander with a reputation of losing his team in combat, is convinced that Kurita (the Draconis arc from the first story arc) is up to something on Mozirje. Unfortunately he’s saddled with a crew of newbies who don’t like him because of his reputation, a former acquaintance is wrong about events surrounding…it’s never really confirmed what their relationship is, actually…and someone wants Frost dead or at least away from Mozirje!

What they got right: A look from the other side of the war shows the comic isn’t taking sides and gives everyone a proper showing. This is good for fans of the game who have a preference for one faction or house over another. This issue was a good set-up for the mystery involved.

What they got wrong: Thanks to a bit of research I learned that Blackthorne got a few facts wrong, like military rank titles and technical information. This story doesn’t continue in issue #4, but in an annual that includes this issue and a compilation of the first two issues under the title “Honor”. That wouldn’t come out until March of 1989.

Recommendation: These books are no longer considered canon by the new owners of the Battletech game but they’re still good stories. This is the last of the Blackthorne books currently in my collection, but the three I’ve reviewed are good reads.

Tomorrow we begin the Malibu comics run.
