Doctor Who Vol. 3 #14
IDW Publishing (October, 2013)
“Dead Man’s Hand” part 2 (yes, I missed part one) WRITER: Tony Lee ARTIST: Mike Collins SELECTED COVER ARTIST: Mark Buckingham COLORIST: Charlie Kirchoff LETTERER: Shawn Lee EDITOR: Denton J. Tipton
I missed part one due to the event of the past couple of months. Apparently the Doctor and Clara are in the Old West (yes, again) and have made friends with Oscar Wilde and Calamity Jane because New Who. (The old show didn’t do this nearly as often.) Wilde’s intended ran off with Bram Stroker (I haven’t studied their history so I’ll let it go) so he’s in America. Jane’s looking for her friend, Wild Bill Hickok, who apparently can kill with his finger.
But as the Doctor learns this issue only if you’re in the right spot, leading the group to a cache of future items. Clara and Jane, having been in the right spot but shared the shot, and thus survived, stay behind while the Doctor and Oscar travel to where the spot is connected and finds an alien who comes to Earth to judge it, and decided it’s time to end it.
What they got right: It’s good to see Tony Lee back with the series, brief as it will be with IDW losing the license. We get a new twist on zombies just when you thought it was overdone. I still want to see it die (pardon the term) but at least someone did something different with the concept, though not unique.
What they got wrong: The horse gag from “A Town Called Mercy” is back. While wanting to be called “Krull The Immortal Conqueror” is less disturbing to me than a horse with gender identity issues, it still brings some unintentional questions about the nature of horses in the Doctor Who universe.
Recommendation: It’s good to see Tony Lee back, especially after the lackluster previous storyline. Worth a read.
