The Rocketeer/The Spirit: Pulp Friction #3
IDW Publishing/DC Entertainment (November, 2013)\
WRITER: Mark Waid ARTIST: J Bone COLORIST: Rom Fajardo SELECTED COVER ART: Chris Samnee (artist) and Jorde Bellaire (colorist) LETTERER: Tom B. Long EDITOR: Scott Dunbier “ROCKETEER” CREATOR: Dave Stevens “SPIRIT” CREATOR: Will Eisner
The investigation moves to Central City, where Betty finds herself the victim of Trask and the Octopus’ special camera. As The Rocketeer battle Trask’s men the Octopus captures the Spirit and has the mind-controlled Betty become his executioner.
What they got right: I like that the second half of the story is in the other character’s turf. There’s more fun with Cliff and Denny. Like I’ve said before, the Rocketeer doesn’t have a recurring villain so he does have someone to “play” with while the Spirit has his old foe.
What they got wrong: I can’t speak for the Spirit, but a camera that can transport people and things like bullets to someone else? That’s far even for the Rocketeer. (Actually, it reminds me of the video reviewers like the folks I work with at Reviewers Unknown. :D)
Recommendation: Still enjoying this story and consider it one worth picking up.
To set-up the Best Scene Nomination: Cliff is in the Spirit’s mausoleum base and just heard about the Spirit’s backstory.
