Fanboy #5

“Why am I feeling a draft?”

Fanboy #5

DC Comics (July, 1999)

WRITER: Mark Evanier
ARTIST: Sergio Aragonés
“FINSTER’S FANTASIES” ARTISTS: Dick Sprang, Jim Mooney, Joe Gigella, Neal Adams, Frank Miller, and Bruce Timm
COLORIST: Tom Luth
LETTERER: Todd Klein
EDITOR: Tony Bedard

A copy of Batman #1 is stolen, and for once it’s not Weasel. As Finster tries to put the clues together it comes in the form of a Batman tale that spans his various generations. While Finster solves the case, he just may lose the girl. Well, the one that actually likes him.

What they got right: As a celebration of Batman (as well as Finster showing those talents he doesn’t realize he has), it’s a great comic. Unlike the last Batman parody Mark and Sergio worked on for Destroys DC it doesn’t take a lot of shots and shows how much they love the character.

What they got wrong: The text page is less about Finster and more about Batman, which is fine and maybe Batman is Finster’s favorite superhero or something, but while we’ve learned more about Finster previously here all we learn about is Batman’s history and it’s just not the same.

Analysis: Not a bad mystery, and while we don’t learn more about Finster it’s still fun seeing him team with numerous variations of Batman and you’re rooting for him with Sandy…which will come to a head tomorrow in the final issue of Fanboy.
