I know my reviews are a bit spoiler-y to begin with, but this issue I can’t discuss without the big reveal about Tyler and the origins of Herobear and our villain. So if you want to read the book first, do so. I enjoyed this so much that I couldn’t pick one moment for Best Scene.

The theme for this issue is belief. What power does belief have? For example, does Tyler really believe that his grandfather is Santa Claus? Does he believe that his play to stop X-5 will work? And does he believe that there is something in that empty box?

What they got right: I’m curious where the full series will take the idea that Tyler is not only Santa’s grandson but next in line Phantom-style to become Santa. (They even have a decent reason why it passes to grandsons and not sons.) But the biggest thing is the theme of belief and the magic in it. As a Christian I can relate to much of this story although Tyler is being asked to believe in magic and Santa Claus. Still not sure where Herobear fits into all that but maybe that’s something else that will be explored in future storylines.

What they got wrong: I swear I had a minor nitpick but I can’t remember it. And I just read this comic the morning before writing this review. That should tell you how good this thing is.

Recommendation: Rare is the comic that can make me tear up, and this is one of those comics. I really want to read more of Tyler and Herobear and I’m glad they announced more stories are coming. This is a must for any comic-reading child or kid at heart.
