A man seeks to be trained by Winged Victory, but her group only trains women, which is tied to her origin. However, someone is trying to frame her as faking supervillains, and it could end up with her losing her powers.
What they got right: I read somewhere that Winged Victory is becoming a breakout character in this series. She does seem like a good character and her backstory is interesting, especially in a genre where female characters are getting shafted, so that may play a part. I missed everything from the first issue ever to the first issue of this run so I don’t know a lot about these characters.
What they got wrong: Is Winged Victory supposed to be the counterpart to Wonder Woman? There’s certainly evidence there, and maybe it’s just me and maybe this has been established in earlier editions of Astro City but I keep thinking back to Superman and Wonder Woman when it comes to the Samaritan’s relationship with Winged Victory. The blame may actually be on the New 52, but it’s all I had to put here. They at least seem to make a better couple than their DC counterparts. At least their “having sex while flying” moment is more tasteful than that scene Frank Miller wrote. (Seriously, Frank, what the @#$%?)
Recommendation: An interesting story and I’m curious to see how it ends. Give it a look.
