In the cover story, Gambit has been stealing for Sinister, who claims to have the cure for the Legacy virus as well as a cure for Rogue’s inability to control her powers. That turns out to be a lie because that’s how Sinister is written. Seriously, the things Gambit has been stealing are tithe boxes filled with Marvel comics. Which gets into my problem with the story. Until that reveal and the now Gambit-powered Rogue’s battle with Sinister it’s all been pretty serious. This ending is rather confusing since it’s been established that Marvel Comics exists in the Marvel universe and chronicles the adventures of the superheroes. And all she sees are a bunch of comics. I get the gag they were going for, but it just falls flat to me, since the story was rather interesting until that moment.
Then…there’s the second story. Sue Storm hits her head and has some weird Wizard Of Oz dream with various Fantastic Four characters taking on the roles in a story so silly that Mad Magazine writers would be scratching their heads. Even I couldn’t get myself to finish the story it was so dumb. I wouldn’t be surprised if someone else enjoyed it but I am definitely not one of those people.
As far as this comic goes I really can’t recommend it. I liked What If better when it took a key point in a character’s life and chose the other path. This part, where they just throw characters into strange situations never really worked for me, and this comic doesn’t work on any level. It may or may not help that I have so little interest in the characters they used.
