TMNT Color Classics V2 #2

A comic about Eastman and Laird’s underpants?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Color Classics Vol. 2 #2

IDW Publishing (December, 2013)

originally published as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #14 (Mirage; May, 1988)

“The Unmentionables”
WRITER/PENCILER/CO-INKER: Kevin Eastman
CO-INKER: Eric Talbot
LETTERER: Steve Lavigne
IDW COLORS: Scorpion Studios
IDW EDITOR: Tom Waltz

A statue of a cow that used to stand on a building Casey and his cousin used to go to when visiting their grandmother has been stolen. Casey drags April and the Turtles into the search…and then misses most of the action while the reason for the theft involves criminal and political upheaval.

What they got right: You wouldn’t think there would be a lot for the Turtles to do here in this small town, but thus far we’ve gotten two stories that wouldn’t have worked in New York City. Granted, it’s not a great story, but it’s a fairly decent one.

What they got wrong: IDW states on the inside cover (in small print at the bottom) that this is a reprint of issue #13. It isn’t. I looked online and it’s actually #14. #13 involves aliens taking a bid for power to Earth. Hopefully they print this even though Eastman & Laird didn’t work on it, or at least get the numbering right in the next few issues. It looks like an interesting story, though. The cover is even an edited version of #14’s cover to push Casey and Raph closer together and zoom in.

Recommendation: A decent story, but not a great one. Worth getting for completists or if you have some extra money, but otherwise I doubt there’s a major impact on the series here.
