Bucky O’ Hare #1 (Special Edition)
Continuity Publishing (January, 1991)
WRITER: Larry Hama ARTIST: Michael Golden ORIGINAL COLOR DESIGNER: Cory Adams
In another dimension, mammals fight for survival against the toad menace. The crew of the Righteous Indignation, led by captain Bucky O’Hare, is under attack by a squadron of toad fighters. One of his crew is killed thanks to a lucky shot and a damaged photon accelerator. Faced between certain death and potential who knows what, Bucky chooses to risk the latter, while in another dimension, the Earth boy Willy is about to test a machine that looks quite like it.
What they got right: For a smaller company in the 80’s the art is decent. You get a good introduction to the crew and just enough information to follow along and make you want to know more.
What they got wrong: I think someone missed a caption box because there’s an asterisk next to the acronym S.P.A.C.E. but no caption explaining what it stands for. (Wikipedia claims it stands for “Sentient Protoplasm Against Colonial Encroachment”, which sounds as forced as all heck.) Also, Willy just happens to have a photon accelerator? Are we to assume he built it?
Other notes: That wasn’t a typo before. This was a reprint of the first issue, possibly to coincide with the animated series, which is why it’s a “Special Edition”. I can’t find a price on it, but that’s the only thing “special” I see about it. There was also a toyline and a video game on the NES to tie-in with the cartoon.
Recommendation: I enjoyed the cartoon as a kid and was happy to find this comic. I wouldn’t mind find the other issues or the UK exclusive continuation. Give this one a look.
