Captain N: The Game Master #1
Valiant/Nintendo Comics System (1990)
Credits are poorly done for all of the Valiant/Nintendo comics, as I’ve stated in reviews and any Friday Night Fight to use the Nintendo Comics System comics. This is a shame as, while names are given, what they did aren’t. So all I can do is list who worked on the comic.
George Caragonne Bob Layton Ken Lopez Art Nichols John Coallero Bryan D. Leys Mike Chen P. Zorita Jade Rodney Ramas Dan McKinnon J. Jackson and the Gradation
Like all the Nintendo Comics System titles, the first issue begins with a brief explanation of the series, but if you’ve heard of the cartoon you already know how that goes.. Another short, “Every Dog Has Its Day”, has Uranos the Sky God (from the Kid Icarus game) attempting to lead an army of skeletons on the Palace while almost everyone is gone. However, Duke the dog was left there. You can guess what happened. I don’t know why Uranos was used by this comic since they were already using Eggplant Wizard from the same game, and one of the game characters that was actually in the show.
In fact, Eggplant Wizard plays a role in the first story, “The Fruit And Vegetable War”, where he tricks the vegetables into taking the tomatoes by making them believe their vegetables instead of fruit. (A lot of people are confused by that because tomatoes are often treated as vegetables in everything from salad to a BLT.) Kevin and Kid Icarus went to Cornucopia to get food for the army…from a land where the food are living beings. Even I have trouble getting into that, and the fruit and vegetable puns kill the rest of this story.
After the Duke short we get our second tale, “Money Changes Everything”, featuring the comic debut of Samas Aran, hero of the Metroid game and never used in the show despite Mother Brain being the leader of the united game villains. I’m guessing they used her since they couldn’t license the non-Nintendo games for the comic, so no Mega Man or Simon Belmont/Castlevania. If you’re expecting all the badass personality that you swore was missing from Other M you might get it, if you throw in greedy and setting up a love triangle along with Captain N and Princess Lana. Still, it was a good introduction as she tries to steal from Mother Brain and the N-Team tries to take the source of Mother Brain’s power.
The Duke and Metroid stories are the only good ones here and if you come across them mixed with better stories they’re at least worth a read. The first story was uninteresting. Beyond that you’ll have to decide for yourself if you want to track this comic down.
