Batman '66 #1

Check out my sweet ride!

Who hasn’t posed near the Batmobile?

Word came out yesterday that Adam West/Burt Ward Batman series would finally be coming to home video, and this has been confirmed by Warner Home Video. While the theatrical movie has been available on home video for years, rights issues blocked the television series from hitting DVD or Blu-Ray (please tell me there will be DVDs and not just a Blu-Ray release) until apparently recently. Rumors came out that this was going to happen but always turned out to be wishful thinking. Meanwhile episodes play on the Hub network.

A similar problem happened with the live-action version of Shazam! but that finally hit DVD in 2012–and I’m still too broke to get it! (Now I just wish they’d put out the animated shows and not just their guest-appearances during the Hero High portion of Kid Super Power Hour.) If memory serves correctly, if this release goes through the only live-action DC series left to hit home video would be the latest season of Arrow, at least until the proposed Gotham City prequel actually does comes out. (Word is the Wonder Woman prequel Amazon has sunk. I can’t say I was confident about that one.)

I know there are people who don’t like the 1966 TV series. Well guess what? You don’t have to buy them. For the fans of the three-season campy romp, however, this is great news and I’m one of the people looking forward to seeing this released at long last. And congratulate me because I made it through the whole review without a “bam, pow” or “holy …” reference, since the mainstream press can’t stop using them with ANY story about comics and comic adaptations. It kind of takes the fun out of it.
