Robocop #1
Marvel Comics (March, 1990)
“Kombat Zone” WRITER: Alan Grant PENCILER: Lee Sullivan INKER: Kim DeMulder COLORIST: Steve White LETTERER: Richard Starkings EDITOR: Gregory Wright
RoboCop comes across gang members attacking a man. His investigation leads to fixing a form of combat using tasers and insulated suits. However, the man behind the fixing is also working for Nixco, who has plans to get into Delta City using their own RoboCop knockoffs.
What they got right: RoboCop looks more like RoboCop than in the adaptation. There’s some decent catch-up of the important details for anyone who didn’t see the movie or the adaptation. It also makes sense that a rival company might try to make their own cyborg cops.
What they got wrong: Except you can’t just make a cop whenever you want. OCP is supposed to have an exclusive to run the Detroit PD. Lewis gets a one-page cameo when it would have been nice to see her be part of the first story. Delta City is also supposed to be OCP’s idea and personal project. How can Nixco get involved? I do have some idea how contracts work. Also the gang members are on hoverbikes, a technology never seen in the movies or the TV show Marvel co-produced. This is supposed to be the near future, which also makes the mini-lion in one of the “Media Break” segments hard to believe.
Recommendation: A good start. I’m at least curious to see where this arc goes. Might be worth a look.
