RoboCop #2
Marvel Comics (April, 1990)
“Murphy’s Law” WRITER: Alan Grant PENCILER: Lee Sullivan INKER: Kim DeMulder COLORIST: Steve White LETTERER: Rich EDITOR: Gregory Wright At least I THINK he’s the editor because the letterer keeps being cute with the editorial names!
RoboCop escapes the NixCops but is heavily damaged, Kyng is taken by the rouge “cops” (to be turned into a NixCop) and a civilian is hurt. Murphy is ready to give up, but one of the scientists trying to prove his ED-209s can still be good cops gets Lewis kidnapped, leading to a three-way brawl between RoboCop, two EDs, and the NixCops. Lewis fights back and soon she’s saved by RoboCop while the other sides are taken out.
What they got right: It stands to reason that having all three sides involved in Lewis’ rescue would happen. It is nice to see Lewis doing something in the story, even if it is as a kidnap victim. (One that fights back, mind you.)
What they got wrong: Murphy talking about how there’s only one law and that it’s his. That made me think of Judge Dread and then I realized this does feel like a lighter, American version of Judge Dread more than it does RoboCop.
Recommendation: A decent start, but not one that is really impressing me. I wonder what the next storyline has in store.
