RoboCop #3
Marvel Comics (May, 1986)
“Dreamerama” WRITER: Alan Grant PENCILER: Lee Sullivan INKER: Keith Williams COLORIST: Steve White LETTERER: Richard Starkings EDITOR: Gregory Wright
Thieves steal four particular dream recordings from a place that kind of operates like Rekall, only they record dreams and let other people experience it. The “Old Man” and the president of Nixco, along with four other business bigwigs, once let their dreams be recorded as part of a promo stunt and a man with a beef against all of them after their companies “stole” his ideas is out to use them for revenge. And he has something for RoboCop too, since some of his designs went into the cop…and the man’s new cyborg gorilla project.
What they got right: I do like the moment between Lewis and RoboCop, and seeing them investigating together like actual partners.
What they got wrong: Again we’re seeing technology that seems far too advanced and strange for the movies. I guess you could make the case for the dream recorder in light of stuff that happened in the TV series..maybe, but the jetpack is out of place. Yes, I know people have made limited-flight rocket packs in the real world but this is three guys with long-distance jetpacks that seem out of place here.
Recommendation: I’m losing interest in this series. It doesn’t feel right to me except for the moments with Murphy and Lewis. However, I can’t really call them bad comics, either. They’re quite good, but they’re not holding my interest thus far.
