“First Contact” part 1 WRITER: Greg Pak ARTIST: Jae Lee COLORIST: June Chung LETTERERS: Dezi Sienty & Carlos Mangual ASSOCIATE EDITOR: Rickey Purdin GROUP EDITOR: Eddie Berganza
With nowhere else to go for help to control Power Girl’s out of control powers, Huntress turns to this universe’s version of her father, Batman. Superman picks up on the disturbance and ends up part of events, helping Power Girl burn off the excess energy while Batman and his alternate universe daughter try to find the source of her woes, a guy who Karen dated in her home dimension.
What they got right: Personally I was content with Huntress and Power Girl staying under the radar. I kind of wanted to see how they’d avoid contact with the Earth-1 heroes. However, I do like how they’re contrasting the two realities, like how in this one Batman and Superman at best tolerate each other. (I don’t like that aspect of their New 52 counterparts but at least it gets a nod here.) Batman and Huntress make a good team.
What they got wrong: Due to the nature of the story, however, we don’t get to see that with Superman and Power Girl, since the story is just Supes keeping PG from hurting anyone and staying in control. It’s not the same. There’s also the art. I’m not going to call it bad because it isn’t, but it doesn’t sit right to me. Superman’s hair, for example, looks like an action figures while Karen’s is a bit too flowy and the villain has this stupid-looking side ponytail that I’ve never seen on a man before. In fact I though he WAS a girl the first time I saw him in Batman’s monitor.
Recommendation: So far I’m curious, but I dropped the New 52 after my job loss for a reason and unless part 2 next week really hits me with something that may be the last I follow of this story. It’s still too Batman/Huntress focused. I want to see Superman and Power Girl do crimefighting stuff, too.
