Batman & Superman: World’s Finest #1
DC Comics (April, 1999)
“Different Worlds” WRITER: Karl Kesel PENCILER: Dave Taylor INKER: Robert Campanella COLORIST: Alex Sinclair COVER COLORIST: Scarlett Smulkowski LETTERER: Bill Oakley EDITORS: Darren Vincenzo & Scott Peterson
An old friend of Clark Kent is retiring from a plastic surgery center for burn victims and the injured co-sponsored by Bruce Wayne. That brings the Caped Crusader and the Man Of Steel together when the man is kidnapped by a vigilante looking for a new face. However, events cause the surgeon to get killed, and the heroes wonder if they should have worked together instead of separately.
What they got right: This “First Year” story is another telling of how Batman and Superman first met but while I think that already happened post-crisis it’s still a good story. Even while not working together they still manage to work well together and it’s only a screw-up at the end that shows they should join forces in the future.
What they got wrong: I’m not going to say the art is bad, but the hair looks like an action figure and the poses are something I would do, only with a better grasp of drawing anatomy and perspective than I currently can. Also, and this is just modern stories bothering me but it started up in the 90’s with at least Kyle, I’m tired of tragedy being a factor rather than common sense, like the very first Batman/Superman team-up on that boat. (I wish I had that story to show you. It’s from the Silver Age.)
Recommendation: I have this in separate parts, but there is a trade and it’s worth reading.
