Adventures Of Superman #11
DC Comics (May, 2014)
“The Dark Lantern” WRITER: Jim Krueger PENCILER: Neil Edwards INKER: Scott Hanna COLORIST: Jason Wright LETTERER: Wes Abbott EDITOR: Alex Antone “SUPERMAN” CREATORS: Jerry Siegel & Joe Shuster
A Green Lantern who failed to save Krypton has taken it hard on himself, at least until someone tells him that a Kryptonian survived on the planet Earth. The unnamed GL is still grief-stricken over what happened but the ring won’t let him commit suicide and death is the only way he can stop being a Green Lantern, thus he feels that it’s only fitting the lone survivor of Krypton be the one to kill him…but the guy who told him about Superman is hoping what the GL carries will kill Superman instead!
What they got right: Nice bit of scheming by the (spoiler, which will be ruined in the Best Scene nomination), being one of Superman’s long-time enemies. I also like seeing that no matter what Superman not only won’t kill the Green Lantern but also says he forgives him even while the real baddie is trying to kill Superman. That could have been the last thing he ever said, “I forgive you for not saving my homeworld”. THAT is Superman, folks!
What they got wrong: Over all these 75+ years and multiple continuities there have been so many aliens attached, legitimately or not, to Krypton’s destruction that I’m really tired of this plot. Can we stop this now? Please? Soon the Haunted Tank will be connected to Krypton’s going boom!
Recommendation: A darn good Superman story. Worth picking up or tracking down the digital first edition.
