The above T-Shirt made an appearance at this year’s WonderCon event and the internet exploded with…disapproval. Now I don’t know what the creator intended or the seller thought it would demonstrate. Maybe it was people tired of fangirls who kill the enjoyment of something with over-enthusaism and “true fan” nonsense, but then why single out the girls and not the fanboys who do the same thing?
Instead the message we’re getting is “we don’t like girls in our fandom” as if being a geek now means joining the He-man Woman-Haters Club. (Not to be confused with He-Man who rather likes the ladies who fight evil beside him.) I’ve see the term “geek gatekeepers” pop up in the past few days and when you consider everything from the “Fake Geek Girl” pseudo-controversy to the death and rape threats going towards female creators and critics they’re not far off. We should be an inclusive community.
I could probably get into this despite my intent to focus on the product and creators but I think Greg Rucca did a better job of that I ever could, although mine would have less cursing. Still, I don’t have a wife and daughter being told to stay out of something I love because they don’t have the right chromosomes. This nonsense has got to stop, or do these geeks WANT to be loveless? Maybe they’re all angry gay people, who knows? Point is…..WE’RE TIRED OF YOUR CRAP SO KNOCK IT OFF ALREADY!
