Adventure Comics #0

Superboy was nervous when appearing on America’s Got Talent.

Adventure Comics #0

DC Comics (April, 2009)

featuring a story originally published in Adventure Comics #247 (April, 1958)

“The Legion Of Super-Heroes”
WRITER: Otto Binder
ARTIST: Al Plastino

Sadly they did not reprint the Green Arrow and Aquaman stories from the original comic. This was to debut a new Adventure Comics series, so naturally they chose a story with a character that no longer exists in continuity. Yes, I know it’s the Legion’s first appearance but it still seems odd.

Also there was a teaser for Blackest Night with Lex and Braniac, but it’s Blackest Night so I don’t care.

Superboy is surprised to see three kids call him by the identity he isn’t dressed as (Clark when he’s Superboy and Superboy when he’s Clark). They are in fact three members of a superhero team in the 31st Century called the Legion Of Super-Heroes and they want to make Superboy an honorary member. But not before having a little good-natured fun with him first.

What they got right: For the time period it’s a good idea, giving Superboy some new adventures to have in the 31st century. Each member (or the three we see–Saturn Girl, Lighting Lad, and Cosmic Boy) is no slouch with his or her powers and seeing them deal with an emergency you wouldn’t expect (like Saturn Girl using telepathy to raise a statue from the water) gave a good surprise.

What they got wrong: In the future Superboy is honored, but unless it’s the Smallville connection shouldn’t the tributes be to SuperMAN?

Other notes: They were just figuring out the Legion so there are a number of differences from the group that came. They use jet packs instead of flight rings. Cosmic Boy has magnetic eyes derived from “special serums”. Also Superboy doesn’t have heat vision. This is when he and Superman melted things using the heat given off by his X-Ray Vision. Heat Vision wouldn’t be an official superpower for a while.

Recommendation: If there was a full reprint of the entire issue (outside of the black and white Showcase if one exists) I’d point you to that instead to get the Green Arrow and Aquaman stories. This, however, makes for a decent substitute.
