RoboCop Versus The Terminator #1

You know what would improve the Detroit economy? Not making giant statues.

RoboCop Versus The Terminator #1

Dark Horse (September, 1992)

WRITER: Frank Miller
ARTIST: Walter Simonson
COLORIST: Rachelle Menashe
LETTERER: John Workman
EDITOR: Randy Stradley

In the far future, the Terminators have wiped out all of humanity except for one soldier who is able to get to one of the time machines. She’s also learned that in this continuity Skynet was formed using the mind of Alex Murphy so she goes back in time to kill him, unaware that when she appears he’s already dead…and reborn as RoboCop! She destroys RoboCop but Skynet senses the change in the timeline and sends three Terminators back to stop her, but RoboCop, unaware of what’s going on, saves the woman who would have destroyed him.

What they got right: I have to admit, a crossover between everyone’s favorite cyborg cop and everyone’s favorite killer robots is an awesome idea. As an alternate continuity I don’t even have a problem with RoboCop being the core of Skynet…not yet, anyway. I also like the scene where the soldier tricks the ED-209.

What they got wrong: Sane Frank Miller is still Frank Miller. Old Detroit is an anti-gun nut’s worst nightmare and everything the NRA is trying to convince everyone isn’t typical of gun owners. Seriously, even if the second amendment was properly enforced this is NOT the world everyone would want. Also, why is an ED-209 patrolling the streets? And is there both a kidnapping AND an illegal gambling casino being menaced by a suicide bomber in the same building?

Recommendation: I remember liking this comic when I first bought the trade and while I have some issues as a critic I still liked it as a comic reader. For another opinion check out Linkara’s review of this issue. His review is funnier than mine, but I’ll be doing the other three issues first.
