Scribblenauts Unmasked: A Crisis Of Imagination #5

As the crew on Rann gets past the Weaponeers, the villains take a powerful weapon and use a Zeta beam to go to the conquered Watchtower. Lily and the Justice League there are transported to the Phantom Zone, but the Phantom Stranger (no relation) is captured before he can release them. Meanwhile Zod and his crew capture the heroes, hoping to escape along with them. Back with the other team, they race to Earth but are stopped by Lobo…and Braniac!

What they got right: There’s a fight scene that uses video game live bars. Not having played the game this comic is based on I don’t know if it’s in keeping with the game but I liked it. I also liked the various other references I won’t spoil here. There was some good action here. And even though I haven’t played the game I know about it that bringing up the question of where Maxwell’s creations is an interesting one and I hope they explore that in this story without breaking the game franchise.

What they got wrong: The whole thing with Braniac feels like an unnecessary distraction to me but maybe it will pay off here. And while I’m glad Lobo appears to be based on the DCAU Lobo (the only version I really tolerate), it’s still Lobo. Yes, that one’s personal and at least it isn’t Wolverine but it’s still Lobo!

Recommendation: Still a better, more fun read than anything from the New 52. This is the comic to introduce kids to superheroes and what the DCU SHOULD be.
