Star Mage #2
IDW Publishing (May, 2014)
WRITER/CREATOR: JC De La Torre ARTWORK: Franco Cespedes ASSISTANT EDITOR: Cori Zaragoza EDITOR: Tom WaltzAs Darien learns more about his lineage his powers seem to start growing and while somethings (like protecting their ship) are hard others (like astral projection) happen without him even trying. But he doesn’t get the full story…or a warm reception on his parents’ homeworld.
What they got right: I identified with Darien in the previous issue which is good because this is mostly incomplete exposition. However, De La Torre appears to have thought out the history of this universe and how magic/Kishpu works in this universe. Hopefully we don’t get the usual “we don’t have to explain it, it’s magic” approach to Kishpu.
What They Got Wrong: So far I’m not convinced these people should be saved. Never mind wanting to kill a kid based on blind panic and rage but they don’t seem like the nicest sort except for the king we have to assume is dead. There are also times Darien seems to taking this way too easy, like the other, non human races but I could be projecting.
Recommendation: I really hope this stays as all-ages friendly as these first issues. This is a fascinating comic that’s worth taking a look at. No Best Scene but overall I like what I see thus far.
