Fury Of Firestorm #3
DC Comics (August, 1982)
“A Cold Time In The Old Town Tonight…” WRITER: Gerry Conway ARTIST: Pat Roderick INKER/EMBELLISHER: Rodin Rodriguez COLORIST: Gene D’Angelo LETTERER: Todd Klein EDITOR: Len WeinRonnie’s activities as Firestorm (who still doesn’t have the police on his side, or maybe it’s that same cop) are interfering with his personal life. Doreen isn’t speaking to him, he’s off the team, and his father is on his case. Meanwhile, Martin’s rival decides to steal a tape that may be the one Martin recorded Firestorm’s history on in the first issue. However, this all must come second when Killer Frost escapes and uses her freezing power to turn New York into a tomb of ice. And when she demands Firestorm kneel to her as the new queen of New York…he does?
What they got right: They had a nice funeral for Ravenhair’s grandfather and Ronnie wanting to bring the muggers who killed him in was a good epilogue for that storyline. While Ronnie’s personal life issues seems more like a Marvel or later day DC story it was told well enough that I felt for Ronnie and don’t feel right complaining about it. I also like what appeared to be a throw-away scene re-introducing Firestorm to readers may actually be important to the overall story.
What they got wrong: Speaking of Marvel, how stupid is the judge to release a woman who calls herself Killer Frost and must have super-cold powers being kept in a booth that would kill anyone not named Mister Freeze is that she doesn’t believe Frost actually has superpowers? It’s not like she didn’t make the papers last time or an attempt to take over the world in an issue of Justice League Of America. And I know we’re supposed to hate Cliff but he really took a verbal shot at Ronnie after a funeral? Honestly? Even Flash Thompson had lines he wouldn’t cross. The soon this schmuck is out of the comic the better. Sadly, it won’t be for a long time yet. Yes, I know I said I liked the idea before but he’s actually gotten worse in the time since.
Recommendation: A good start to the arc, although like the Black Bison story I’m missing how it ends. Still worth a look, though.
