Fury Of Firestorm #5
DC Comics (October, 1982)
“The Pied Piper’s Pipes Of Peril!” WRITER: Gerry Conway ARTIST: Pat Broderick INKER: Rodin Rodriquez COLORIST: Gene D’Angelo LETTERER: Phil Felix EDITOR: Len WeinRonnie decides that it isn’t worth chasing Doreen and considers pursuing a relationship with Loraine as Firestorm (which he somehow talks the professor into since they’re both Firestorm). However, Senator Reilly has come into possession of Pan’s flute thanks to a mysterious collector, and the Pied Piper wants the power it contains for himself. And when he has them he uses it to take control of the area and even though Firestorm uses his powers to protect his ears he now has to protect himself from the bewitched public.
What they got right: So now Firestorm gets to play with other heroes’ villains. Not surprising it’s a Flash villain since after the initial miniseries Firestorm appeared in Flash’s comic before this series started. We also see him rescue a couple of kids from a train they decided to jump on and that event plus dealing with the Piper shows he’s getting better at how he uses his powers.
What they got wrong: Watching Ronnie and Martin’s lives fall apart thanks to Firestorm feels more like a Marvel comic than a DC one. Also, Ronnie convincing Martin to help pursue the relationship with Loraine feels…a bit uncomfortable, really. And not just because she’s older than Ronnie but way younger than Martin.
Recommendation: I finally have the second half to one of these stories but this is a good start to the storyline. We’ll see where it goes next week. It’s worth looking up.
