Scooby-Doo Team-Up #6
DC Comics (November, 2014)
“A Super Friend In Need” WRITER: Sholly Fisch ARTIST: Dario Brizuela COLORIST: Franco Riesco LETTERER: Saida Temofonte ASSISTANT EDITOR: Jessica Chen EDITOR: Kristy Quinn
Ghosts kidnap Superman so the Super Friends (roll call: Batman, Robin, Wonder Woman, Aquaman) call in the experts, Mystery Inc. To reduce panic the gang dress as the Junior Super Friends (Wendy, Marvin, Wonderdog, Zan, and Jana–nobody left for Gleek) and Supergirl is called in to help. But can even the combined forces of the Justice League and the Scooby gang be enough to defeat their foes? Especially when the Legion Of Doom are involved?
What they got right: This was intended to be the last issue (although #7 has a solicit and they’re moving from DC superheroes to the Flintstones) so this would have been a good way to go out. I like that we find out what happened to Wendy and Marvin (apparently Wonderdog’s fate is top secret) and unlike a certain pre-52 Teen Titans issue I could mention it’s a happy one. Also, not only is Supergirl here (correcting an oversight from the show…she didn’t even make a guest appearance?) but wearing my favorite of her outfits, biased as I am since she was wearing it the first time I saw her in a comic book. You know, this one.
What they got wrong: However, we don’t learn what happened to Zan and Jana or if they’re still here. Also, Sinestro’s ring is based on fear, which didn’t happen until the 2000s. I only bring it up because this appears to be based on Super Friends and The New Scooby-Doo Movies so why add in something recent when everything else right down to the character design is at least based on those shows (even if the art style doesn’t match). The same goes for Bizarro, who acts more like comic Bizarro than Super Friends Bizarro.
Recommendation: I’m glad this was upgraded to full series because I’m really enjoying it. I can’t wait to see what happens when they start meeting other Hanna-Barbera characters instead of DC heroes.
