Fury Of Firestorm #44
DC Comics (February, 1986)
“An East Wind Blowing” WRITER: Gerry Conway PENCILER: Rafael Kayanan INKER: Mike Machlan COLORIST: Nansi Hoolahan LETTERER: Carrie Spiegle EDITOR: Janice Place
Typhoon launches a strike on Pittsburgh, planning to weaken Firestorm. This succeeds as Firestorm’s plan to disrupt the villain’s tornado leaves Ronnie and Martin unable to fuse. Ronnie is sure it’s temporary but the possibility has Martin thinking that he might actually miss Firestorm, and he’s having trouble getting used to teaching as well. As for Typhoon, a talk with his daughter leads him to return both his children to their mother’s care.
I was going to review this in the usual format, but the positives and negatives are actually the same thing. Except for Cliff Carmichael still being in this comic. What was his point and why was he snooping in Ronnie’s room? I don’t care, I just want him gone. And the art is in a serious nosedive lately. I was hoping #37 was a fluke but it’s worse than that issue. Otherwise, the focus is solely on character, which would be fine except Firestorm losing power seems more like an afterthought. There’s the plot about Typhoon’s relationship with his children and his ex-wife wondering if she pushed him too far while her new husband is a jerk to pretty much everyone except her. Apparently Ed is engaged to the woman suing Firestorm, and I don’t care about either plot. I’m more interested in Ronnie and Martin and what’s going on with Firestorm. Hopefully next issue covers that or at least cuts down the running subplots. Or writes Cliff out of the comic.
I really can’t recommend this comic, especially as your first look. Outside of Firestorm splitting, there’s nothing here worth caring about.
