Chapter by Chapter features me reading one chapter of the selected book at the time and reviewing it as if I were reviewing an episode of a TV show or an issue of a comic. There will be spoilers if you haven’t read to the point I have, and if you’ve read further I ask that you don’t spoil anything further into the book. Think of it as read-along book club.

The epilogue is only three pages so let’s just finish the whole book. Spock is back, Koronin nearly blew up the galaxy and last we saw, Kirk, Spock, Steven, and Uhura may have sacrificed themselves to stop her. Except that this is the first team-up of the most well-know spaceship crew in science fiction so…yeah. It’s more a case of HOW they will survive. Let’s end this sucker.
Wasn’t this all happy endings. Except Uhura’s torture of the girl that hassled Janice was borderline psychotic. Sometimes you can push a prank too far, Uhura.
But everyone survived. Lindy got to perform for the Klingons (although all they liked was Cockspur’s butchered Hamlet soliloquy). Kirk made peace with both Spock and Scotty (although I’m not quite sure how that last one got pulled off). Janice decided she’s going to testify against the people who screwed up her old colony. The worldship went on its way. Koronin broke out so maybe she’ll be back in anothyer McIntyre story. “Starfleet” stopped bothering Sulu and went to one of the cat people and she gave him to her cat people boyfriend. Stephen may or may not continue his search for emotions and he and Spock made peace. It all wrapped up neatly.
When I was first reading through I thought it was a bit too neatly wrapped up, especially Kirk and Mr. Scott. While that still bugs me, I don’t really have a problem with the rest of it. The Klingons (which acted more like the movie version rather than the TV version they would have met at this point) and their view of Vaudeville had its moments and the coming together of the crew worked more for me than the Abrams’ movie. One thing I think I missed, is when did Sulu withdraw HIS request to transfer to the Phalanx?
I’ll give my thoughts this weekend of the entire book this weekend over at The Clutter Reports but while it wasn’t the story I remembered it wasn’t that bad of a read. Next week or the week after, depending on scheduling, we will debut a brand new book for Chapter By Chapter. It promises to be different from any of the books I’ve reviewed in this format. No superheroes, no spaceships, no robots in disguise. It will, however, have a horse. I’ll just leave you with that until our next installment.
