Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego #3

DC Comics (November, 1996)

“Room With A Deja Vu”
WRITER: Barry Liebmann
ARTIST: S.M. Taggart
COLORIST: Rick Taylor
LETTERER: Albert De Guzman
EDITOR: Laura Hitchcock

Dazzle Anne Nonker and Ben Derbyfore (who suffers from Dejavuitis) steal a giant sundial, an observatory, the atomic clock, and is targeting the Tibetan Wheel Of Time. Her plan is to create a machine that steals time. Forcibly joined by (I think) 10-year-old Misty Larkin (who only wants to join Acme as part of her goal to become President), Evan and Bazooka Mel try to foil this final plan, but it’s Misty’s speech to Carmen about how the Tibetan people have suffered enough that the crook decides to abandon the operation.

What they got right: Misty could have been annoying as heck, but somehow she worked okay. Carmen has a chance to prove she isn’t a total villain by deciding not to torment the Tibetan monks on their big occasion.

What they got wrong: They have to sneak in a very mild subplot of Evan’s self-esteem being down because he failed to catch Carmen last issue, so they blame it on the time-stealing device and all is well. This was very unnecessary.

Recommendation: A fun story, that’s worth picking up if you come across it. Nothing to really hunt for, though.
