Captain Planet And The Planeteers #6
Marvel (March, 1992)
“Rat Trap!” WRITER: Pat Kelleher PENCILER: Dave Taylor INKER: Robin Riggs COLORIST: Sarra Mossoff LETTERER: Caroline Steeven EDITORS: Stone/Tokar (That’s the only credit given and a short online search turned up nothing)
Verminous Skumm finally takes time from attacking Planeteers in the shadows to actually launching a plan. He tests a special algae that will take all of the oxygen from the water. After testing it in a lake he plans to move on to the oceans of the Earth, soon ending all life. With Captain Planet’s help, the Planeteers take out the algae…and then attack Gaia! Skumm hinted his earpieces did more than help him track the Planeteers.
What they got right: Now this was a good adventure. There’s more of the subplot mystery, the algae is a good threat to overcome, and it doesn’t feel like it needed more time than it got, with hurt other good ideas. Plus they were willing to take a chance on this story going into multiple parts. We can’t even get a Marvel Power Ranger comic that’s a full issue length.
What they got wrong: Wheeler still uses the Rooskie-Tooskie line. It was fine once but that is not his nickname for Linka and the more the writers have him say it the dumber it is.
Recommendation: Tomorrow is the last issue I picked up so we’ll see where the subplot goes. As for this issue it’s worth picking up out of curiosity. This could have been a good franchise, you know.
