Speed Racer Chronicles Of The Racer #2

Speed seems to be having a hard time believing this nonsense as I am.

Trixie and Racer X both independently go to Mercury Pictures to help Speed, and he needs it against a robot. As the three argue afterwards the floor gets way and they’re captured by knights, one zapping Speed out. He dreams of another Racer adventure. This time Sprint Rackham wants to join the jousts but his father, the King (who wears a piece reminiscent of a wrestling championship belt and has a court jester named Woodsprite who has a bunny named Chim-Chim-Cheree and now this comic is trying my patience!!!!!!!!!!!!) refuses to let him enter. Using a gimmick-filled armor called the Mage V (subtly was the first victim of the joust apparently) created by Myrddin (Sprint is friends with his son, Sparkington, lest thou didst think Sparky was spared this farce), Sprint secretly enters, defeating the Grey Knight. The festivities are momentarily interrupted by Robin Hood wanna-be Robin Ecks. This whole paragraph is the definition of trying too hard.

Here’s where the rails aren’t even on the map. The Grey Knight for some reason is a Medieval version of a cyborg, with wood and metal and I don’t know what’s taking the place of circuits. Everybody out of nowhere decides he’s some kind of monster, even as Sprint tries to defend him. the Grey Knight curses him and, aided by a mechanical dragon, takes off with Sprint’s love, Lady Beatrix. Finding the amulet half that Myrrdin lost, Speed uses it to power the Mage V armor’s gadgets which he uses to chase after the dragon. and save Beatrix, the Grey Knight burning in lava with the other half of the amulet.

The dream ends and Speed thinks he knows how to work the amulet now. Too bad they’re all tied down, about to suffer a similar surgery to the Mach V and Shooting Star.

This comic hurt to read. They’re trying WAY too hard to tie every Racer back to Speed. It’s like the entire cast (even Inspector Detector has a counterpart in this one) gets reincarnated for every Racer. If Pops had this as well (and I have to ask how much Rex was told about the Racer powers), does that explain why Mom Racer looks so much like Trixie in this comic? We’re half-way through and there are much better Speed Racer comics I wish I was reading right now. Seriously, avoid this miniseries.
