Jackie Chan’s Spartan X: The Armour Of Heaven #1
Topps (June, 1997)
“From Russia With Apocalypse” WRITER/PENCILER/COVER ART: Michael Golden CO-PLOTTER: Ric Meyers INKER: Armando Gil LETTERER: Kenny LopezSpartan X tries to bring the helicopter down but fails, thanks to Zenshi, a woman Jackie grew up with at the orphanage that taught them how to fight. Clytie has a tracking device on the helmet and tracks him to a Russian mobster who want to use the Mind Of God to find a deadly secret under a museum…that houses nuclear missiles!
What they got right: Spartan’s backstory with the orphanage mirrors Jackie Chan’s own childhood with the Peking Opera School, only they were more focused on teaching them how to perform rather than beat people up. The addition of Zenshi gives us a glimpse into Spartan’s past.
What they got wrong: Wait, Russia had a bunch of nuclear missile silos underneath a museum? And are we suppose to feel sorry for the helicopter pilot Crenshaw forced into helping him escape and nearly splatting Spartan X when he’s still doing the man’s dirty work?
Recommendation: Still enjoying the comic. It’s a must for Jackie Chan fans who are into comics.
